Description

This is Popeye! For the last two weeks we have been looking after him as his foster-carers. Popeye was a stray until then before he was rescued by a local organization here called Ninelives, who then introduced him to us, he is the first cat we've fostered and today (in a couple of hours) will be going to his forever-home! He was quite sick when he came to us with ringworm, but after a little over a week of treatment he is already looking and feeling better.

So why am I telling you all this? Well for many people owning a cat on a permanent basis is impossible - it's too long-term, you don't know if a cat would be right for you or a relative is allergic - I myself, renting an apartment as a new expat to a foreign country, thought it would be years before I could own a cat again! But fostering is the answer, most rescue centers all over the world have fostering schemes where you take a cat (or kitten, or dog/puppy!) into your home until it can find a safe home. As well as giving you terrific company for that time (though a rather heartbreaking goodbye) I believe fostering has many benefits as to why you're doing a good thing:

-Most shelters simply don't have room, at many this means once more come in with no homes for them to go to, even temporarily, animals may be killed; you can stop that happening.
-You adjust an often-afraid stray or unsocial cat into a warm, welcoming home.
-Rescue shelters can provide everything! Bear in mind this varies from shelter to shelter, but 75% of them will give you the food/litter/tray needed for the cat, all you give is a happy temp home.
-Volunteers at shelters tend to look after the cats prior to fostering (they are over-fostering though and have no room, hence the necessity of fosters) so if you make sure to mention, they can give you a housetrained cat/kitten!
-You may even fall in love with one of the darlings! For uncertain people that aren't willing to dive into owning a cat forever but have always liked the idea of having one this will unearth the reality of owning a cat, what's involved in how to look after them and, if you decide to provide food/litter yourself, give you an idea of the economics required to own a cat.
-Specifically for DeviantART: models! As you can see from this image there are many beautiful cats looking for fostering and if you don't know any one that owns a ton of cats for you to get a variety of photos (or in the case of you more artsy folk, drawing reference) this is an excellent way to build up your portfolio of cats. Not only do you get great images to work with but your images can really help the rescue cat find a home!

NOTE: In the case of those who are unable to own pets entirely (i.e. property regulations saying no pets) I would also strongly urge you just to visit these shelters! Often the photos that are advertising the rescue animals (if there are ANY photos!) are poor snaps from a mobile phone, so offering your services to a shelter can do a world of good in re-homing animals (again, as well as adding to your portfolio!). Do good with your talents and help animals in need by offering these shelters your abilities!

Thank you for taking the time to read the above, this is a topic that is dear to my heart - living here in Athens I see hundreds of strays every month, getting soaked in the rain, frozen in the cold and going hungry at night - just imagine how much you can help them as well as brighten your own day-to-day life. Do something good.

NOTE2: To my watchers, it will not likely become a regular part of my uploading to post photos of domesticated animals instead of wild ones, don't be alarmed, this is simply to increase awareness for something amazing people can do!
